How to Get Tickets to the Oscars

February 19, 2015

In the past few weeks, my Wasabi Publicity team has been busy scoring for our PR clients the Today Show, USA Today, Investors Business Daily, Shape and many other venues including The Academy Awards. My team had approached media contacts to review our client’s amazing Survival Bars and viola, an email got forwarded to a friend of a friend, and we got word the bars were so clean and so healthy, they were going to be featured back-stage at the Oscars by the Academy Awards production team. At first, we thought it was just going to be added to gift bags, but after several conversations, our contacts said the title of the bars were so clever and the taste of the bar so well-done, that the bars were to be featured not only in the bags, but also the green rooms. So, how do you get a ticket to the Oscars? 1 Great Brand + 1 Great Product + 1 Great Pitch = In the door. What are you doing lately to get your book, service, product or organization front and center with influencers? This is your place for free tips from the trade. Until my next post, check out media who are looking for sources every day 24/7 at

Spring Clean Your PR

April 15, 2013

Pamela Yellen with Sir Richard BransonIt’s that time of year again when everyone is spring cleaning. Are you? Well, even if you’re not think about angles that could land you choice media coverage. We pitched our client Pamela Yellen, who teaches financial self-sufficiency, around a ‘spring clean your budget’ angle and Fox Business picked it up. You never know what a little clean-up job can uncover. Turn over a new leaf and spring-clean your PR. I did so and even found the above lovely photo of Pamela with Richard Branson. (Don’t you just love looking at old photo albums?!)

The Ultimate Gift

December 1, 2010

The New York Times reported on my client, Landmark Education, over the Thanksgiving weekend. So did Bloomberg Businessweek. Shh, I have an amazing December story idea I’m sharing with my personal media contacts right now. I’ll report back here in December on how I turned the “ultimate gift” of media coverage into the “ultimate gift” at your house. I can’t tell the whole world about it now as I don’t want to scoop my media friends. So stay tuned and I’ll share soon. Meanwhile, I hope you’re getting the gift of air and ink coverage. If you’re not, what’s stopping you? There are tons of media contacts looking for sources at PitchRate.

Delivering Extreme PR

November 16, 2010

Do you recognize this river? It’s the same river you probably saw in the movie, “Deliverance.” Most of you know I’m a whitewater kayaker and in this shot I’m running a rapid called, “Sock ‘Em Dog” on the Chattooga (Section  4). Many consider this rapid dangerous – others consider it fun. Choose your own perspective. But it just leaves me to ask, “Are you delivering extreme PR” in your business? What I mean by that is, “Are you taking risks?” Maybe you know you’re ready to be an expert voice on Dr. Phil but are just afraid to offer a story idea to the show’s producers. Or perhaps you read Ladies Home Journal and think wow, I could write an article like that, but you refuse to contact the editor clearly identified at the beginning of the magazine. Well, people who know me well, know my favorite saying, “The only risk in life is living a risk-free life.” So take that risk! Contact your favorite media venues and let them know your creative ideas. If you don’t, another will, trust me. My mother asked me why I started whitewater kayaking in 1997. She said, “Oh, Michelle, why do you do such dangerous things?” I quickly replied quoting something I had just read in a book (sorry I forget the author), “Mom, we [kayakers] do not take these risks to escape life but rather, to prevent life from escaping us.” There was a pregnant pause after I said that and my mom then said, “Hmm. That’s a good answer.” So, get out there. Send that email. Make that phone call. Get you some extreme PR and see how it will benefit your business.

Watering Your PR Garden

June 11, 2010

If you want great PR, are you ‘watering the garden’ every day? Consider the relationships you have with media contacts are just like tender seeds in a garden. If you don’t nurture and grow those relationships, you will not see the contact develop into media coverage. So, just as we all are watering those 2010 flowers and herbs, be sure to reach out to your prized media contacts. Plants love rich soil. Media love personalized pitches. Flowers love sunshine. Media thrive on breaking news. Weeds can choke your baby plants. Being overly promotional can turn off producers from using you again. And if you feel plant food helps maximize your gardening efforts — I think my mom uses something called MiracleGrow — use incoming media lead services like PitchRate where daily you get leads you can grow into a beautiful media coverage hot-house.

Spring Has Sprung

March 10, 2010
My Husband Snaps a Shot of Spring Sprung

Warm weather. I am loving it. My husband and I were getting over colds last weekend and instead of enjoying our off-road motorcycles or whitewater kayaks, we planned an easy-going day in our back-yard with our husky, Lou Lou. We snapped photos of the budding flowers (see photo) and made a camp-fire. Today, Wednesday, I’ve still got cabin fever and am LOVING this warm weather. Spring has sprung and with it, my client campaigns are heating up as well. Here’s a taste of what I’ve got cooking right now:

> MONEY EXPERT – Learn how to “Bank on Yourself” with financial security expert, Pamela Yellen whose book comes out in paperback March 23. Should you get a money-back guarantee from your financial advisor? Yellen says you can and you should. And what about your taxes? Are you getting all you should? Ask me for her tax tips.
